Accessibility Statement

Our Commitment

Southern California Justice Center (“SCJC”) is committed to ensuring digital accessibility for people of all abilities, including individuals with visual, auditory, motor, speech, and cognitive disabilities. We believe that access to legal information and resources should not depend on a person’s ability to use a particular device, browser, or assistive technology, and we are continually working to improve the accessibility and usability of our website, socaljusticecenter.com (the “Site”), for all visitors.

Accessibility is an ongoing effort, and we view it as an integral part of our mission rather than a one-time project. We strive to apply relevant accessibility standards as we design, build, and update the Site.

Conformance Standards

We aim to conform to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (“WCAG”) 2.1, Level AA, published by the World Wide Web Consortium (“W3C”). These guidelines are an internationally recognized set of recommendations for making web content more accessible to people with a wide range of disabilities, and more usable for everyone generally. WCAG is organized around four core principles, often summarized as POUR:

  • Perceivable: Information and user interface components must be presentable to users in ways they can perceive, such as providing text alternatives for non-text content;
  • Operable: User interface components and navigation must be operable, including by keyboard alone, without requiring fine motor control or precise timing;
  • Understandable: Information and the operation of the user interface must be understandable, including predictable navigation and clear instructions; and
  • Robust: Content must be robust enough to be interpreted reliably by a wide variety of user agents, including assistive technologies such as screen readers.

We also seek to comply with applicable accessibility requirements under the Americans with Disabilities Act (“ADA”), Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act where applicable, and California’s Unruh Civil Rights Act, to the extent these laws apply to our digital properties.

Measures We Take to Support Accessibility

SCJC takes the following measures to ensure accessibility of the Site:

  • Including accessibility considerations as part of our site design, development, content creation, and quality assurance review processes;
  • Providing meaningful alternative text descriptions for informative images, icons, and graphics, while marking purely decorative images so they are appropriately ignored by screen readers;
  • Ensuring sufficient color contrast between text and background elements to meet WCAG 2.1 AA contrast ratio requirements;
  • Structuring content with semantic HTML and a logical heading hierarchy to support navigation and orientation by screen readers and other assistive technologies;
  • Ensuring interactive elements, such as forms, buttons, menus, and links, are operable via keyboard navigation alone, without requiring a mouse or touch input;
  • Providing clear, visible focus indicators so keyboard users can identify which element is currently active;
  • Labeling form fields clearly and providing descriptive error messages when a form submission cannot be completed;
  • Avoiding reliance on color alone to convey important information;
  • Designing content to be resizable and to reflow appropriately when viewed at different zoom levels or on different screen sizes;
  • Periodically reviewing the Site using a combination of automated accessibility testing tools and, where feasible, manual testing, including keyboard-only navigation testing; and
  • Training relevant staff and contractors involved in building or updating the Site on digital accessibility best practices.

Ongoing Monitoring and Continuous Improvement

Accessibility compliance is not a one-time achievement but an ongoing process. As we add new pages, features, or content to the Site, we work to apply the same accessibility principles described in this statement. We periodically reassess the Site against current accessibility standards, taking into account evolving best practices, updates to WCAG, and feedback received from visitors, including feedback submitted through the channels described in Section 5.

Known Limitations

Despite our best efforts, some content or functionality on the Site may not yet be fully accessible. This can occur for a variety of reasons, including:

  • Content, plugins, or third-party widgets embedded on the Site that were developed or are maintained by outside vendors;
  • Legacy content published before current accessibility standards or our internal review processes were fully implemented;
  • Limitations inherent in current automated accessibility testing technology, which cannot identify every possible barrier; and
  • The continually evolving nature of accessibility guidelines, assistive technologies, and browser or device capabilities.

We are actively working to identify and remediate any such issues as they are discovered, whether through our own internal review or through feedback from visitors. If you encounter any accessibility barrier while using the Site, we encourage you to let us know using the contact information in Section 7 so that we can work toward addressing the issue, both for you directly and for future visitors.

Feedback & Assistance

We welcome your feedback on the accessibility of the Site. If you experience any difficulty accessing any part of the Site, encounter content that does not appear to meet accessibility standards, or need assistance completing a form or accessing information in an alternative format, please contact us using the information in Section 8. When contacting us, it is helpful, though not required, if you can describe:

  • The specific page or feature where you experienced the issue;
  • The browser, device, or assistive technology you were using, if known; and
  • A description of the problem you encountered.

We will make reasonable efforts to respond promptly and to provide the information or assistance you need, including through an alternative communication method such as by phone, email, or in another accessible format, while we work to address the underlying issue on the Site itself.

Third-Party Content

The Site may include content, widgets, or functionality provided by third parties that are not under our direct control, such as embedded videos, scheduling or calendar tools, chat widgets, social media plugins, or payment processing interfaces. While we select vendors and tools with accessibility in mind where possible, we cannot guarantee the full accessibility of third-party content, as it is governed by the accessibility practices of the third party that created it.

If you experience difficulty with any third-party content or feature embedded on the Site, we encourage you to contact us so that we can attempt to assist directly, identify an accessible alternative, or work with the relevant vendor to improve accessibility going forward.
